Introduction to Bengal Cats

Welcome to the world of the amazing Bengal cat.  If you have not heard of Bengals or just have heard a little bit about them, this article is intended as a brief introduction.

The Bengal is a relatively young breed which has gained immensely in popularity.  It originated with a cross mating between the Asian Leopard Cat and the domestic cat.  The hybrid was initially developed in the United States by Jean Mill of Millwood.  Jean's efforts resulted in a domestic Bengal house pet resembling the physical attributes and beauty of the Asian Leopard Cat.  Others who believed in the breed joined in the efforts to further develop this wonderful cat giving us our domestic 'living room leopards' with the ever developing beauty of their wild ancestory.

The name “Bengal” is derived from the Latin name of the Asian Leopard Cat "Felis Bengalensis". While the domestic Bengal cat resembles its wild ancestor in physical beauty and attributes, it is a very loving and dedicated pet.

The Bengal is generally described as a medium size, sleek, yet well-muscled domestic cat.  Its hindquarters are slightly higher than its shoulders and its thick tail is carried low.  The wild appearance is enhanced by its unique spotted or marbled coat on a lighter background.  Colors include brown, yellow, red, golden, snow and silver.   It is desirable and many Bengals do exhibit a gold or pearl dusting effect which is called “glitter” throughout their pelt.  Glitter gives the Bengal the appearance of a glass like sheen and sparkles in natural lighting.  The feel of the pelt is soft, silky and luxurious and should be experienced.

The vocalizations of Bengals are also unique.  Some will often coo and chirp in their chatter to you and their loved ones in addition to more recognizable meows.   Some have a voice mimicing the Asian Leopard Cat.

The Bengal is alert, highly interactive and very affectionate.  They love to run, jump and somersault making them a natural for cat agility competitions (ICAT).  They like high places and generally they love to play with (and in) water. Enjoyable activities may include showering in a water dish and joining you in your shower.  Most of all they love you and enjoy your every activity.
